The offical language of the us?

I remember hearing or reading something about the founding of the nation. apparently we invited a german noble (frederick?) to be our king. he declined. we also hated the british so much we voted on making german our offical language, but it failed. am i just smoking crackalackadingdong or something? wasnt english our official language?
