Please help with Banjo Kazooie/Tooie (xbla)?

So i bought and played Banjo kazooie on xbla, and got everything there is. I wasn't able to get the ice key or eggs, because i don't have nuts and bolts, which i'm sure you need. I have never played banjo tooie, so i wanted to wait for that to come to xbla. Well now it is and this stop 'n' swap is so confusing. Every time I look it up all i see is stupid stuff talking about the N64 and how it DIDN'T work, but i wanna know how it DOES work. I know on Tooie that you get the ice key at that barren wasteland place, and i know i got something there (pretty sure it was the key...) and then tried to go to the chest with the giant whatever it's called, and the dang thing wouldn't open. Please someone explain in full detail how to do STOP'N' SWAP, and what to do on each game. Or give me a page where can read a bout it, not about what it WAS supposed to do on the N64.
